Populism, Euroscepticism, and identity politics have become defining features of the political landscape in Central and Eastern Europe in the recent past. ‘Illiberal democracy’, a term coined by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, has been pitched as an alternative to the prevalent liberal paradigm of the past three decades. As Europe prepares for 2019 European Parliament polls, how will these trends impact the future of the bloc?
Led by our guest speaker Dr Otilia Dhand, YPFP invites you to an exploration of regional identity and geopolitics in Central and Eastern Europe that will examine different perceptions of the region, as they vary between EU member states.
Dr Otilia Dhand is Senior Vice President at Teneo Intelligence, a New York- and London-based political risk consultancy. She specialises in east-central European countries, including Russia and Ukraine. Dr Dhand is a frequent media commentator and the author of The Idea of Central Europe: Geopolitics, Culture and Regional Identity. Furthermore, she is a regular speaker at varied forums ranging from foreign policy professionals to investors.
Drinks and canapes will be provided.
