At the State of the Union address on 13 September 2017, European Commission President Juncker called for the creation of a fully-fledged defence Union by 2025. YPFP and Saab are excited to welcome you to our next panel event, which aims to explore the concept of a fully fledged defence Union. We will discuss President Juncker’s proposal for a fully fledged defence union with four distinguished speakers, welcoming: PSC Ambassador to the Netherlands Joanneke Balfoort, as well as Daniel Fiott, Defence Policy Analyst at the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) and Arnout Molenaar, Senior Expert on Defence Policy at the European External Action Service (EEAS).

We will consider what a fully fledged defence union may look like, what objectives should be reached and what steps lie ahead for the EU, Member States and other stakeholders in reaching those objectives. We will also discuss what this means for the future of the Union in a global context, and for the transatlantic relationship.

This event will draw on the discussions from the YPFP workshop in early September led by Daniel Fiott. These events aim to challenge our expectations, and to consider key defence developments on the EU landscape from different angles as well as their meaning for the future.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!
