The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has engaged in a long-term insurgency against the Turkish government for over three decades. Ongoing peace efforts came to a halt in mid-2015 when talks between Turkey and the PKK failed, prompting a renewal in hostilities. The PKK and aligned Kurdish groups have since conducted attacks across Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria, whose civil war has helped further complicate the situation. The lasting impact PKK’s activities in the region remains to be seen.
