A New Decade for European Defence

The world’s geopolitical order has evolved considerably over the previous decade towards great power competition, and the European defence landscape has adapted accordingly. Now in the year 2020, the European Commission has emphasised Europe’s global role: defence is now in the European policy limelight with the creation and implementation of the European Defence Fund (EDF), Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) and a new Directorate-General for Defence Industries and Space.

This event will explore how European defence policy is evolving and what these developments mean for the relationships between the EU, NATO, the defence industry and nation states. To what extent can a European strategic culture on defence emerge, or is defence still largely nation-state-driven? What are the expectations from the EU, its Member States and industry on the effects of the current drive to enhance cooperation in defence? Beyond the EDF and PESCO, what are logical next steps in projecting European power on the global stage?

Please join YPFP, in partnership with Saab, for a multifaceted panel discussion to delve into the complex, exciting and rapidly evolving European defence landscape.
