YPFP Brussels would like to invite you to our next UN Series event, The Politicization of Humanitarianism in Africa.
You will have the chance to learn more about the politicization of humanitarianism in Africa and human rights violations of International Humanitarian Law in conflict situations with our speaker, Chris M. A. Kwaja, Ph.D. We will also shed light on the political means of protecting humanitarian workers in African countries and why these are not compatible with the principles of humanity, neutrality, and impartiality. The topic will be explored particularly in the context of interruptions of humanitarian aid delivery and human rights violations against civilians through intervening variables.
Chris M. A. Kwaja, Ph.D. is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the Centre for Peace and Security Studies (CPSS) at Modibbo Adama University in Nigeria. Prior to joining the CPSS, he lectured at the Centre for Conflict Management and Peace Studies at the University of Jos, Nigeria. Since 2008 he has been a member of the Working Group on the Use of Mercenaries at the UN Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR). He is also a recipient of several research awards such as the UN Mandated University for Peace Doctoral Research Award (2009), as well as the Peace Fellow Award of the West Africa Research Centre (2010). In addition, Mr. Kwaja has worked on the activities of corporate and non-corporate mercenaries in Africa, with specific reference to Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, and Darfur.
