Artificial intelligence is revolutionising how we create and share information, but it's also being weaponised. From deepfakes to algorithm-driven disinformation, AI is helping authoritarian actors like Russia, China, and Iran spread propaganda, manipulate public opinion, and undermine democracies.

This event will explore how AI is reshaping the information landscape, focusing on:

  • Protecting democracy and election integrity

  • The role of media and civil society

  • Finding the balance between innovation, security, and free speech

Experts will discuss real-world examples, tools like Information Laundromat, and how EU institutions, particularly the EEAS, are responding to the challenge. We’ll also look at the Digital Services Act and what more can be done to build public resilience and protect democratic values in an AI-driven world.

  • Bret Schafer – Senior Fellow and Head of the Information Manipulation Team, Alliance for Securing Democracy at the German Marshall Fund
  • Naja Bentzen – Policy Analyst, European Parliamentary Research Service
