Our Gender Initiative 2020’s second event in partnership with Generation Equality will tackle women's political participation and leadership. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2020, as of 2019, women held only 25.2% of parliamentary (lower-house) seats and 21.2% of ministerial positions. While the European Parliament boasts a notable 39% of female MEPs, having a gender balance above the 30.2% average of the EU’s National Parliaments.

Over the years, the EU has focused on equal treatment legislation, gender mainstreaming and specific measures for the advancement of women, including at the political level. Its commitment continues today with the EU Gender Equality Strategy delivered by the President Von der Leyen’s Commission, which aims among many other objectives, at challenging gender stereotypes and achieving gender balance in decision-making and in politics.

High-level panelists will share their insights and will discuss the progress made so far in ensuring women’s participation in politics and leadership positions, as well as future challenges. At the same time, part of the discussion will focus on the role of women political leaders during the Covid-19 pandemic.
