It is still desirable for the EU to accede to the Convention? How does the current situation align with the Lisbon Treaty? This panel-discussion with professionals from within the field will discuss the ongoing negotiations and tackle the pressing question: Why is the accession still relevant today and what will be the impact on issues such as the principle of equal treatment and non-discrimination in the EU?

All experts will start with a brief introduction explaining the difference between the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights and their (challenging) relationship. Then Mrs. Maria Diaz Grego discuss the heavily debated Opinion 2/13 of the ECJ and give her view to the relevance of the accession.

The event will be followed by a Q&A session where the participants will have the opportunity to discuss the recent developments in the accession and ask questions to our distinguished guests.

Speakers:

Mr. Jörg Polakiewicz Director of Legal Advice and Public International Law, Council of Europe

Prof. dr. Tobias Lock Professor of Law at Maynooth University (Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law)

Mrs. Maria Diaz Grego Policy Analyst at the European Parliamentary Research Service
