A decade ago, revolutions shook the Middle East and North Africa. While demonstrators in some nations wanted more liberties, optimism for a more democratic Middle East faced significant setbacks as the fall of established autocracies led to civil war, discontent, and additional authoritarianism in most countries. This event will examine the changes and challenges countries in the Middle East and North Africa are facing one decade after the Arab Spring; and assess the status of civil society, human rights, and democracy in the region; form the perspective of the National Endowment for Democracy, and discuss their efforts to make the region more democratic.

Speaker: Amira Maaty Senior Director for Middle East North Africa Programs, National Endowment for Democracy (NED)

Moderator: Hussain Alshabib, Programming Officer YPFP London

Chair: Tayba Ahmed, Communications Officer

Date: 7th July 2021

Time: 6pm (UK time), 1pm Washington DC / NYC)

The event will be followed by a Q&A session where the participants will have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions to our distinguished guest.
